</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Du Quoin police officers late Wednesday assisted Carbondale police and secret service agents in arresting a suspect wanted in connection with a Carbondale shooting Tuesday night.

Du Quoin police led authorities to a Howard Street residence where Maurice L. Cooper, 23, was arrested for aggravated battery with a firearm.

Assistant Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer said Cooper had a friend living there.

Carbondale Police were called to the area of East Chestnut Street at North Robert A. Stalls Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of gun shots fired. When officers arrived, they found one man had been shot. He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale then transferred to a St. Louis hospital.

Police say Cooper and the victim were acquaintances, and that the shooting was part of a personal dispute.

This is the second time in recent months Du Quoin officers have assisted other agencies in an arrest. A suspect in a Mount Vernon case was arrested here about two months ago.
