Du Quoin Lake Resident Makes Case for Abandoning 20-Foot Wide Service Road

The Du Quoin City Council Monday night agreed with Du Quoin lake resident Mrs. Jeannie Thrower that the city has no use for a short, 20-foot ribbon of property between her family's house and the lake listed on the lake plat as a "service road" and agreed to vacate that property and give it to her to beautify and maintain. City attorney Aaron Atkins will draw up the documents to be filed in the courthouse, and the public will be given notice of the abandonment in an upcoming legal notice in the Du Quoin Evening Call.

The council met for less than 20 minutes and also:

• Approved a resolution adopting a budget for Du Quoin tax increment financing districts #1, #2 and #3 for 2011 revenues collected in 2012. The TIF districts have generated nearly $182,000 for redevelopment in the community. The upcoming budget for the TIF Districts include continued downtown development, promotion of the industrial park and solar park with a new Web site and construction of an access drive to the new dialysis center adjacent to the Southtown Shopping Center and repayment of TIF district startup monies to the City of Du Quoin. The district paid Du Quoin $10,000 past year and will do so again this coming year.

• Approved resolution for Washington Plaza West 2nd plat immediately north of Washington West 1st plat where the new dialysis center is being built.

• The community was reminded of the dedication Oct. 6 of the new Civil War memorial in Keyes Park. Activities begin at 9 a.m. with the formal dedication at noon.
