Du Quoin: Leaf Fires Out by 7 p.m.
Du Quoin public health and safety officer Ron Darnell Monday reminded residents that city ordinance requires that all leaf fires be out by 7 p.m. each night during the yard cleanup season.
His report noted that he invoked 39 property mowings at a cost to the city of $3,920 and some of that money is being recovered in court actions. He said despite the drought several late season mowings had to take place and 33 weed ordinance violations were written. Of those 14 owners were found guilty so far.
The city council met briefly Monday night and rescinded a condemnation action on the property at 218 North Walnut Street, noting that neighbors were happy with recent work there.
The council accepted three bids for a surplus pickup truck and sold the truck to Ron Norris for $1,500. Other bidders were Leonard Wohlwend ($655) and Dan McClanahan ($853).
Council members made special note of the service of our veterans and congratulated the football Indians for a great season.
