Ruby L. Longshore

Ruby L. Longshore, age 91, of Du Quoin, Ill., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013 at 3:20 p.m. in Fair Acres Rehab and Care Center, Du Quoin, Ill.

Ruby was born on Junes 11, 1921 in Carterville, Ill., a daughter to John and Elva (Gulledge) Collins. On Aug. 31, 1945, she married Sherman A. Longshore in Pinckneyville, Ill. and he preceded her in death on July 14, 1974. Over the years, she had attended Brother Sherman Longshore's church on Maple Street, Du Quoin, Ill. and Tamaroa Pentecostal Church, Tamaroa, Ill. and then the First United Pentecostal Church, Du Quoin, Ill. She enjoyed playing rummy, watching the Cubs and Cardinal baseball teams and also golf and she loved to sit and do bent and wiggly puzzles. If you lived on the corner of Cole and Summer in Du Quoin, Ill. you would often hear her whistling the Missouri Waltz while walking to Midge's or down to Wilma's as she came home. Ruby was a homemaker, a cashier for Allen's Grocery on Summer Street and worked in the kitchen at Fair Acres Nursing Home in the late 1960's. She cleaned houses, took in ironing and worked beside her husband to keep house and home together. She loved all her family dearly.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda (Jim) Vancil of Elkville, Ill., Barbara (Tom) Yearian of Christopher, Ill.; grandchildren, Jami Vancil (Russell Black) of Du Quoin, Ill., Terri (Troy) Young of Elderado, Ill. and James Jr. (Shelly) Vancil of Murphysboro, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Matthew (Kelcey) Vancil of Du Quoin, Ill., Mackenzie Vancil of Du Quoin, Ill., Hunter and Toby Young of Eldorado, Ill. and Grace, Jenna and Morgan Vancil of Murphysboro, Ill.; great-great-granddaughters, Emma Vancil of Du Quoin, Ill. and Felicia Vancil, arriving in April of 2013; stepdaughter, LaNetta Longshore Brown of Du Quoin, Ill., many step-grandchildren, especially Corky Longshore who delivered many meals to Grandma through Gold Plate Services and Judy Watts Voyles and her girls, Rachel, Christy and Yvonne, who helped Grandma and kept watch over her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elva (Gulledge) Collins; husband, Sherman A. Longshore; a son at birth, Lyle Dean Longshore; siblings, Thelma (Claude) Gentry, Cecil (Frank) Maxwell and Peggy (John) Richardson and step-children, George (Ada) Longshore, Howard (Dorothy) Longshore, Raymond (Elizabeth) Longshore, Hiram (Imogene) Longshore, Dorothy (Robert) Gray, Mildred (Roy) Sizemore and Wilma (Lloyd) Watts.

Funeral services will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Du Quoin, Ill. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend C.L. McKinnies officiating. Interment will be in Old Du Quoin Cemetery, Du Quoin, Ill.

Friends may call at Pyatt Funeral Home, Du Quoin, Ill. on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
