BASKETBALL: Falcons have trouble with Trico
ELKVILLE, IL - Elverado High School varsity basketball players Kyle Whittington, Josh Sarensen, Andrew Jeschke and Kody Ellett were honored on Senior Night at this past Friday's game in Elkville, but little else was celebrated as Trico raced to a 76-33 victory over the Falcons in the regular season finale for both squads.
The Pioneers built up a ten point lead after the first quarter, but really cranked it up in the second - outscoring the Falcons 22-4 in the period and leading 39-11 at the half.
Eight different Elverado players got in the scoring column, but none finished in double digits. Ellett and Eli Fennell each had 7 points, Whittington 6, Justin Sarensen 4, Alec Valerius 3, and Jeschke, Josh Sarensen and Brock Barnes each finished with 2.
For the Pioneers, George Kuhlman led the way with 19 points, Blaine LePere added 15.
Elverado will now prepare for their Class 1A Regional which begins with this Tuesday night's 6:00 p.m quarterfinal matchup with tournament host Zeigler-Royalton. Z-R is the No. 2 seed in the bracket, the Falcons No. 7.
Trico is the top seed in the 2A Regional at Murphysboro and will meet either the fourth-seeded Red Devils or fifth-seeded Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats on Tuesday night at 7:30.
