Shots fired in downtown Du Quoin

A Murphysboro man, James Helm, 21 has been arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon--which turned out to be stolen--after he fired five shots from a semi-automatic weapon on West Main Street in downtown Du Quoin at 1:33 a.m. Sunday morning.

Assistant Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer said Helmer and four others had been at D.J. Mellow's sports bar. They left the bar and before climbing into a car across the street Helmer fired five shots from the weapon. No one was hurt. A witness memorized the license plate number and called Du Quoin police. Jackson County and DeSoto police made the stop south of Elkville. Du Quoin police and Perry County deputies drove to the stop scene and made the arrest. A subject, Jamell Perkins, 23, of Murphysboro, was arrested for obstructing identification and a 15-year-old was cited for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
