Marion Glenn Rushing

Marion Glenn Rushing, age 76, of Pinckneyville, Ill., passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 6:33 a.m. in his home.

Marion was born on Sept. 3, 1936 in Pinckneyville, Ill., a son to Orval and Ernestine (Jenkel) Rushing. He was born again when he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of seven. He showed great determination at an early age. He had to push his way out past the adults to make his way to the altar. On June 14, 1964, he married Bonnie Dodillet of Centralia, Ill. in the United Church of Christ in Irvington, Ill. and she survives. Marion graduated from Pinckneyville Community High School in 1954 and was inducted into the PCHS Hall of Fame. He graduated with a bachelor degree from SIU Carbondale. Marion attended SIU Carbondale from 1954 to 1957. During this time he excelled at football, basketball, track and wrestling. In 1978 he was inducted in the Saluki Hall of Fame where he holds the record of earning 13 athletic letters, more than any other athlete in Saluki history. In 2010 the school renamed a street on the campus after him. After leaving SIU, he went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL and AFL. Two of those years, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Marion was a member of Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, Ill., farmed and worked as a coal miner for over 30 years, retiring from Arch Coal. He enjoyed working with heavy equipment, fishing and taught young boys Sunday school class at Beaucoup Baptist Church for several years. Marion lived his life as unto the Lord. Marion finished his life as a champion.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Rushing of Pinckneyville, Ill.; one daughter, Pamela (Mark) Hall of Herrin, Ill.; two sons, Chad (Cheri) Rushing and Troy (Pamela) Rushing of all of Pinckneyville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Kaelan Hall of Herrin, Ill., and Kenzie and Callie Rushing of Pinckneyville, Ill. one sister, Phyllis Scherle of Martinsville, Ind.; three brothers, Larry (Mary Frances) Rushing, Ira (Evelyn) Rushing all of Pinckneyville, Ill. and Maurice (Leola) Rushing of Steeleville, Ill.; nieces; nephews and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandfathers; two grandmothers; one nephew, Parry Don Rushing at the age of seven; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Scherle and one friend and brother-in-law, Donald Dodillet at the age of 14.

Funeral services will be held at Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, Ill. at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 with Pastor Mark Lee officiating. Interment will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery, Pinckneyville, Ill.

Friends may call at Beaucoup Baptist Church, Pinckneyville, Ill. on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson Society or the Beaucoup Baptist Church Building Fund.
