Lela M. Shaw
Lela M. Shaw, 92, of Elkville, a good and faithful servant of her Lord, a loving mother and grandmother and friend went home at 7:15 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
She was born May 21, 1921 on the George and Jennietta Cox farm in rural Vergennes, the daughter of Charles Gilbert and Alta A. (Cox) Martin. Lela grew up in Hallidayboro and lived her adult life in Elkville where she was a devoted wife and mother. She married Gilbert Shaw in March of 1939 at Jackson, Mo. and he passed away Oct. 25, 1971. Lela had been a widow since the age of 50.
She was a member of the Elkville Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the church.
She worked at the Baptist Student Center as a cook's helper, was a pastry chef at Morrison's Cafeteria. She enjoyed working as a cook's helper at Trueblood and Lentz Cafeterias at SIU. She retired from SIU in 1996 after 14 years of service. She traveled the U.S. with friends, loved working in her flower gardens and enjoyed her church. Lela was most at home in the kitchen cooking for her family and surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She will be missed by her children- Ken Shaw and wife Karen of Carbondale, Dale Shaw and wife Barbara of Elkville and Linda Martin of Elkville, grandchildren- Todd Shaw and wife Kathy, Nicolas Shaw, Cori Shaw, Angela Lesser and husband Mike, Justin Shaw and wife Stacy, Matthew Martin and wife Mona and Andrew Martin and wife Hillery, great grandchildren- Mercedes Fernandez, Madison Shaw, Elias Shaw, Jack Martin and Ella Martin, great great granddaughter- Sophia Lesser, several nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She will be met in heaven by her husband Gilbert Shaw, parents Charles G. and Alta Martin, son- Herbie Shaw, granddaughter- Emily Shaw, sister- Doris Leake, brother- Delmar Martin.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Darryl Williams officiating.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Burial will be in the Elkville Cemetery at Elkville.
Friends may make memorials to the Elkville Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
