Marvin Lee West
Marvin Lee West, of Sesser/Carbondale, Illinois, passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:13 a.m. in Herrin Hospital.
He was born Oct. 23, 1946 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin, Illinois to Leon and Lenora (Pavletich) West.
Marvin always considered Sesser his residence but loved Carbondale especially Carbondale Towers and Prairie Living at Chautauqua.
Marvin graduated from Sesser High School in 1964. He also attended Mt. Vernon Community College in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
Marvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active in the Sesser and Carbondale churches. He was a member of the PrimeTimers. He loved attending church and the fellowship the members provided. Marvin especially liked their cookies.
He is survived by three sisters: Kathy West and husband Royce Jackson of Du Quoin, Illinois, Cindy Dame Van Horn and husband Ron Van Horn of Whittington, Illinois, Melinda Kelly and husband Joseph Kelly of Sesser; nieces: Christina Leigh Vickers and husband Uel Vickers of Scheller, Illinois and Aileen Kelly of Sesser, Illinois, step niece: Rachael Jackson of Carbondale, Illinois and step nephew: Paul and wife Paige Pestka Jackson of Miami, Florida and aunts and uncles: Norma Martin of Du Quoin, Illinois, Larry and wife Glenda Pavletich of Sesser and Hollis Dale West of Lexington, Kentucky and great·nephew: Haystin Vickers and great niece: Henley Vickers both of Scheller, Illinois. He is also survived by several loving cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Joseph and Pierina Pavletich and Hollis and Gladys West; aunt, Patsy West; uncle, Charles "Chub" Martin, and his nephew and namesake, Brandon Lee Dame.
Marvie was a special and unique individual in many ways. Marvin was gifted in many areas of life. Due to his reading ability he was very knowledgeable with the Bible, various biographies, particularly WWll leaders. He loved libraries, especially Carbondale Public Library. Marvin possessed a love for board games, cards, bingo, and game shows, especially Jeopardy. He loved the arts and enjoyed attending events at Shyrock. WSIU was his favorite channel. Marvie loved to dance and probably the best dancer of the family. He was always ready for a family activity, birthday dinners, holidays, and vacation. Marvin thoroughly enjoyed his various trips with the church.
Funeral service will be Monday, June 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Brayfield ·Gilbert Funeral Home of Sesser, Illinois with Pastor Joseph Kelly of the Eternal Friends in Christ and Tom Byford of First United Methodist Church of Carbondale officiating.
Visitation was Sunday, June 16, 2013 after 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home .
Internment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser, Illinois.
Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church of Carbondale or Sesser or donor's choice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
