Storm damage across Du Quoin

A pop-up storm shortly after 2 p.m. Monday damaged several homes in Du Quoin neighborhoods. Mrs. Joyce Kujawa owns a rental home next to her own home in the 300 block of South Illinois Avenue in Du Quoin. Large limbs from an oak tree fell on the back of the home while a carpenter was inside putting sheet-rock on the ceiling. When the limb hit the house, it knocked a chimney over onto the roof causing the sheet-rock to fall. The carpenter was pinned inside and had to be helped through a back window to escape. The Olive, Ballentine and Illinois Avenue areas all saw limb damage. Ameren worked for several hours to fully restore electric service.
