Weekend fire destroys garage on Line Street

An 8:07 p.m. Friday fire at the home of Charlotte Lively at 2 North Line Street completely destroyed her garage and a carport to the rear that was the subject of a neighborhood dispute over the carport at the end of the garage encroaching over the city's alleyway. However, the two do not seem to be connected. Before last Monday night's city council meeting, The city determined that the alley had never been abandoned and that the carport--but not the entire garage--was encroaching on the alley. The Du Quoin fire department was back at the station at 11:34 p.m. that night. The department was assisted by Tamaroa, Dowell and Benton firemen. Elkville firefighters staffed the station. A Du Quoin police officer was at the scene of the fire Saturday morning. The fire is under investigation.
