Jamie Ellermeyer sworn in as Du Quoin Chief of Police

A promise to find the man who stole son Cody's sports cap--and, he did--led to a career in law enforcement for Jamie Ellermeyer, until then a four-year, seven month correctional officer.

Cody, an athletic All-American, pinned the Chief of Police badge on his father after a moving swearing-in ceremony and the retirement of 30-year officer Mike Ward.

As part of the evening's truly emotional moments, the badge of the late beloved Chief of Police Jim Booker--that Ward wore--was returned to Booker's son, Evan.

The night was inspired by some greats of law enforcement--Chief of Police Ken DeMent who came before, investigator Gary Darnell, the late Jim Booker and Perry County's State's Attorney lead investigator Tim Russell, who has inspired many in law enforcement. Russell's mentoring over the past 35 years drew applause from the 75 in attendance, as did the ceremonies themselves. Others include the late Richard Fronek and Blaine Bastien.

"The 6,000 in our community sleep well because of Mike Ward and the 30 or more who work within the police and fire departments," said Mayor Rex Duncan of Ward's retirement. "Congratulations on retiring safely," he said.

Ellermeyer came to the department in 1997, was graduated from Du Quoin High School, joined the U.S. Navy and had "the natural ability to find violators with his God-given talents," Ward told the audience.

He would become the department's lead detective in 2001, sergeant in 2004, lieutenant in 2005 and assistant Chief of Police in 2007 when Ward was appointed chief.

Because of the diligence on the part of all, Du Quoin remains one of the safest communities in Southern Illinois. "I look forward to leading the department into the future," said a grateful Ellermeyer.
