Donald Raymond Stowers
Donald Raymond "Don" Stowers, 74, of Zeigler, Illinois, passed away at 11:27 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with his loving family at his side.
Don was born May 10, 1939 in Du Quoin to Herchel Herman and Edna Cora (Morris) Stowers.
He married Sherry Diane Adams Sept. 20, 2002 in Bamanet, Alabama. She survives in Zeigler.
Other survivors include a grandson and his wife, Matthew and Ashley Stowers and a great grandson, Ethan Stowers, all of Du Quoin; two step-daughters, Diana Villarreal of Zeigler and Stephanie Villarreal of Granite City, step-granddaughter, Metilda Pepmiller of Zeigler; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Joe and Sue Stowers, Paul and Sherry Stowers and Clarence Stowers; two sisters, Velma Harsy and Patricia Williams, both of Du Quoin; his mother-in-law, Shirley Adams of Arizona; several in-laws and nieces and nephews and numerous close friends.
His parents; a daughter, Barbara Ann Stowers; a son, Frank Stowers; three brothers, William, James and an infant, John Stowers, and four sisters, Nadine Ridgeway, Dorothy Rucks, Stella McKinsey and Eva Elledge preceded him in death.
Don was an Army and Air Force Veteran who was discharged in February of 1962. He was a retired coal miner who last worked at the Kerr McGee Mine in Galatia and was a member of the UMWA Local Union. He was a lifetime member of the Zeigler American Legion and Eagles Lodge.
Funeral services for Mr. Stowers will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler with Pastor Denny Bush officiating. Burial with military rites courtesy of the Zeigler and Orient American Legions, the West Frankfort VFW and Marion National Guard Flag Detail will be at Zeigler Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
