Donald R. Porter

Donald R. Porter, 83, of Du Quoin, passed away at 8:08 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2015 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Don had been an electrician at Arch of Illinois Captain Mine. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. Don was also a member of the Du Quoin American Legion Auxiliary, Du Quoin V.F.W. Auxiliary, and was a 40-year member of UMW of A. He was a life member of the Du Quoin Elks 884, member of the Du Quoin Eagles and Du Quoin Knights of Columbus. Don was a member of NRA and Ducks Unlimited. He had been a former Du Quoin City Commissioner in the late 60's and had served as Water Commissioner. Don was an avid outdoorsman and avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. He was one of the founders of the Du Quoin Booster Club, a Khoury League Coach and a lobbyist for UMW of A. He was owner and operator of Peach Street Pub.

He was born Aug. 20, 1931 at Du Quoin, Ill., the son of Noel and Vaneta (Rich) Porter.

He married Norma June Hoffman on Sept. 16, 1950 at Du Quoin and she preceded him in death on March 21, 1997. He then married Ruby D. (Holland) Crain on Dec. 9, 1998 at Pinckneyville, Ill. and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin, eight children - Alan Porter and Lisa Woodside of Du Quoin, David Porter and wife Kandace of Du Quoin, Donald Porter Jr. and wife Chris of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Cynthia Reeder and husband Ron of Murphysboro, Harold Crain and wife Jackie of Vienna, Ill., Gaye Feazel and husband Phillip of Du Quoin, Brett Crain and wife Denise of Du Quoin and Jane Mydler and husband Wade of Du Quoin, one brother - Raymond Porter and wife Carolyn of Polk City, Fla., 15 grandchildren - Alana Hubbard, Adrianne Caruso, Drew Porter, Chase Porter, Allison Brayfield, Katie Schaal, Emma Porter, Heather Warren, Jonathon Baker, Stacey Allen, Susan Keerigan, Michelle Miller, Kathryn Kwiatkowski, Nathan Crain and Jordan Crain, 15 great grandchildren and one due in March and his dog - Sugar Tu.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Fr. Joseph Oganda officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Rosary will be prayed at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.
