GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-V-W 'Severs' hopes for a Du Quoin comeback

Sesser-Valier-Waltonville guard Karson Severs hit her first eleven three-pointers on Monday night and finished the Lady Devils' 67-55 victory over Du Quoin with a game-high 33 points.

According to the records on the IHSA's website, the eleven three-pointers ties Severs for the fifth-highest one-game total for three-point field goals made in state history. The record is held by Carrollton's Adele Cook with thirteen on Dec. 13, 2012.

"(Severs) just went off," said Du Quoin coach Shawn File. "The last time we played them I think she had two. We knew going in though, it's not a secret that she can shoot the basketball."

Severs buried five of those threes in the opening quarter alone as the Lady Devils built a 23-13 lead before a 10-0 run by Du Quoin in the second quarter evened things up.

But Severs was just beginning, as she hit three more trifectas in the final two minutes of the half, pushing S-V-W's lead up to 39-28 at the break.

"We started out with Kate (Smith) on her," File said, "and after a couple we thought we'd put Tarynn (Mays) on her, who is typically our quickest defender. They set some good picks for her, some maybe a little more legal than others, but they got her open."

A three by Smith and a Devils turnover that led to a layup for Mays brought the Lady Indians within five with 5:38 to go in the third, but once again, Severs would find a way to get open for three triples before the period ended.

"Out of the eleven that she made, we probably had five of them where I thought we defended ok, we had a hand in the face, we were running at her," said File. "There's one time we knocked her down and she made the shot. You tip your hat and say well done."

The Lady Devils led 54-43 entering the fourth quarter, and a three-point play by Daisy Edmison with 5:45 remaining helped push the lead as high as eighteen.

Still, File was happy with his team's performance on the offensive end of the floor.

"We scored 55 points," File said, "and I told them, offensively there's not much I can complain about. Alaina (Caldwell) is coming around for us offensively, she's shooting the ball real well. Kate (Smith) was able to get to the rim. (Grace) Haney's finishing around the basket. We had good looks, there were some really good things that happened offensively."

Caldwell had 16 points to lead Du Quoin. Smith added 13, Haney 11, Mackenzie Jackson 7, Mays 6, and Sadie Day and Jordyn Bullar each had 1.

Du Quoin (7-19) hosts Pinckneyville (8-16) for a Mississippi Division battle on Tuesday night.
