BASEBALL: Falcons slammed by Century, 14-0

Elverado recorded only two hits and stranded all four base runners they had in Friday's 14-0, five-inning loss to Century at their home field in Dowell.

Both Falcon hits came in the bottom of the fourth when the game was already well out of reach - singles by Zach Berner (1-1, HBP) and Austin Hester (1-2).

"I thought we quit playing hard, that's my biggest pet peeve," said EHS head baseball coach Tim Davis. "Anybody that's played for me knows I don't like it when kids just give in."

The disappointing effort came after a solid outing by the Falcons last Monday in a 5-2 loss at Goreville, where the offense came up with six hits and four walks in a tight game against the Blackcats.

Hester put together one of the best pitching performances of the season for Elverado at Goreville, going all six innings and keeping his team in the ball game by allowing just two earned runs on five hits and three free passes while striking out six, including the final three hitters he faced.

But by the time the Falcons got on the board in the top of the fourth on RBIs from Alec Valerius (ground-out) and Avery Caraker (single), the Blackcats had already crossed the plate five times. EHS left nine men on base in the loss.

Berner (2-3), Caraker (1-2, RBI), Nolan Waller (1-3) and Keaton Tyner (2-3, BB) had hits against Goreville for the Falcons.

Elverado heads to Meridian on Tuesday before hosting Cairo on Wednesday.
