Steeleville High School hosts 12th annual Chalk Walk
STEELEVILLE -- On Friday, April 24, Steeleville High School held its 12th Annual Chalk Walk.
Students came from 12 different schools including Steeleville, Triad, Carlyle, Marissa, Nashville, Trico, Dupo, Lebanon, Gibault, Sparta, Freeburg, and Okawville.
These students were split into a maximum of four-person teams, making 76 teams at the event.
This year's theme was "Classic/Vintage American."
In fourth place was the Gibault team of Hannah O'Neill, Rachel Kuerz and Van Buren. In third place was the Gibault team of Morgan Wiegand, Fei Yang and Nicole Swindle.
The Carlyle team of Paige Sinp, Tanner Voss, Andrew Bassen, and Layla Waddel took second place and taking the gold was the Nashville team of Sam Polczynski, Sydney Bochantin, Maggie Stegman and Alli Kellerman.
"There's a lot of good ones," Steeleville freshman Art Society member Allison Howell said. "It's gotta be tough picking a winner this year."
Throughout the event, Steeleville High School Art teacher Allison Roehrig announced attendance prizes that consisted of various art supplies such as portfolios and watercolors.
"I have great help from the high school student wise," she said. "Every year they just kind of make it easier and easier.
"It's a lot, but once the day gets here it's worth it. All the kids have fun."
Once all the schools arrive, the Steeleville High School parking lot is a chaotic colorful jumble of people and chalk.
"The hardest part is getting everyone checked in in a timely manner," Roehrig said.
"I like how all the artists drew," Steeleville Grade School student Mason Patterson said. "Especially the one that drew the old Bel Air driving. It shows old America."
"The old man with the pitchfork included with that drawing," he added. "The old car reminds me of my grandpa since he used to drive an old Bel Air."
Patterson says he plans to join in the tradition and participate in Chalk Walk whenever he reaches high school.
