BASEBALL: Post 647 Jr. team adds wins over Chester, Herrin to streak

Another day, another win for the Du Quoin Junior American Legion baseball squad.

With a 13-3 eight-inning short-game win over Herrin on Sunday in Du Quoin, Post 647 improved to 13-0 on the season. Jordan Edwards tossed a complete game on the hill, giving up just three hits and only one of them came after the first inning. Edwards walked five, hit two batters, and struck out eight while his offense cranked out eleven hits.

Herrin led 1-0 after two hits in the top of the first, but that lead lasted only long enough for Hank Stewart and Ashton Smith to answer in the bottom of the inning with hits, tying the game at a run apiece.

From that point on, Du Quoin was its' typical dominant self. Smith doubled in front of three walks in a three-run third for Post 647, and Brock Bullar (home run), Smith (single), and Ryne O'Rourke had hits in a three-run fourth inning for the home team. Du Quoin added another run in the fifth without a hit and led 8-3. Post 647 added insurance runs in each of the last three innings, scoring in every frame but the second.

Stewart (2-6), Bullar (1-2, HR, 2 BB, SAC), Smith (3-4, 2B, BB), O'Rourke (2-4), Edwards (1-4, HBP) and Clayton Funk (2-4, BB) each hit safely for Du Quoin against Herrin.

On Saturday, Du Quoin put away Chester 10-3 on the road in a seven-inning contest. Stewart went the distance on the mound, allowing seven hits and three walks with ten strikeouts, and also had three hits at the plate (3-5).

Smith (2-4, 2B), Funk (1-3, BB), Edwards (2-3, BB), Braden Lee (2-4, HBP), Luke Metten (2-5), Ryan Myers (1-3, HBP, BB) and Kameron Johnson (1-3, BB) also contributed to Post 647's fourteen-hit attack on offense.

Du Quoin (13-0) will look to keep their streak alive on Wednesday at Goreville. The July 2nd game at Metropolis has been cancelled.
