BASEBALL: Du Quoin Jr. Legion's win streak ends at 13
There must be something about the number 13 that just doesn't sit well with Du Quoin baseball teams.
Just like the thirteen-game winning streak the Indians' high school team (which featured several of the same players) rattled off just over a month ago, the Junior American Legion team's thirteen-game roll came to an end in search of No. 14 last night at Goreville, as Post 647 fell for the first time this summer, losing 7-5.
The Blackcats took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Du Quoin starter Braden Lee when Nolan Vaughn walked in front of a single by Peyton Guyman and a double by Brant Glidewell. Two errors led to Goreville's second run an inning later, and Post 647 trailed 2-0.
Du Quoin rallied, though, grabbing the lead in the top of the third after a walk to Brock Bullar, a double by Ashton Smith, and a home run by Lee to make it 3-2. The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth, when disaster struck for Post 647.
Ten Blackcats came to the plate, eventually chasing Lee from the mound. Seven total hits - six of them singles - put Goreville ahead 7-3. Glidewell, Vaughn, Blaine Dunning, Peyton Massey, Grant Venus, Davis Helton and Logyn Frassato did the damage for the Blackcats in their five-run frame.
Du Quoin made a run at them in the sixth, chipping away two runs after walks to Luke Metten and Ryan Myers, a sacrifice by Clayton Funk, and a base hit by Jordan Edwards. Post 647 brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a double play and a strikeout later, the streak was over.
Bullar (1-3, BB), Smith (1-3, BB), Lee (1-3, HR, BB), Myers (2-2, BB), Funk (1-2, SAC), Edwards (2-3) and Hank Stewart (1-3, BB) had hits for Du Quoin in the loss.
Post 647 (13-1) will try to get back on track July 7 against Metropolis. Both the July 2 and July 9 games on the schedule have been cancelled.
