Golfing for Wounded Heroes to take place Aug. 8

Chester Country Club will play host to a tournament with a special cause on Aug. 8.

Golfing for Wounded Heroes is a golf tournament designed to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a Veterans charity organization with the purpose of raising awareness and enlisting the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, according to its website.

"I had a buddy, Mike Delancey, who I served in the Marines with," said tournament co-chairman Todd Cowan. "When we were in Iraq together in 2006, he was shot by a sniper and was paralyzed from the waist down.

"The Wounded Warrior Project really helped him and I just figured that I would host this tournament and try and raise money for the Wounded Warriors and help everybody out who have served this great nation."

The tournament is a four-person scramble with an entry fee of $240 per team. The field is limited to 24 teams with a cart fee of $40 per team and a trail fee of $10 per cart.

"We're just trying to raise a lot of money," Cowan said. "We're talking donations to sponsor holes and if someone wants to donate a hole in honor of a fallen soldier, they can.

"Even if it is for someone who has been hurt. I'm sponsoring a hole for all our fallen Marines."

There will be cash prizes and dinner will be included. Cowan said organizers are hoping to have a silent auction with an autographed Tom Brady jersey and a football signed by all the New England Patriots as marquee items.

"Joining the Marines and going to Afghanistan and Iraq twice, you see a lot of bad things going on and it changes your outlook on life," Cowan said of his service. "Seeing how many that affects.

"When you come home and see the war's screwed up a lot of people's' lives, you try and help them out as much as you can. It's the least we can do."

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. For more information, or to register, contact Cowan at 618-615-3264 or co-chairman Curt Owen at 618-830-2915.
