WEEKEND: 3 Things to Do for Jan. 29-31

SEWING DEMONSTRATION

Experts at the Fort de Chartres State Historic Site in Prairie du Rocher will demonstrate the "art de vivre" - or art of life - that put food on French settlers' tables and clothing on their backs 250 years ago.

The series of three presentations begins Saturday, Jan. 30, with sewing demonstrations in the fort's Guard Room.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Beckie Mooneyhan McClelland will demonstrate the methods used to sew on buttons and patches. Then from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., she'll show basic sewing stitches, including the running backstitch, spaced backstitch and hem/whip.

Scrap fabric, thread, needles and buttons will be provided.

Anyone interested in joining the free session should contact David Schultz at david.schultz@illinois.gov or (618) 284-7230.
