On March 9 Cody W. Gass was interviewed by phone by a Perry County deputy. In the course of the conversation Gass made a death threat toward David Stanton, Perry County States Attorney.
In the course of that conversation other claims were made that seemed to give credit toward the threat and the ability to carry out the threat.
Sheriff Steve Bareis was notified and came into the office to investigate.
Following his investigation he contacted Illinois State Police requesting their help in the investigation.
On March 10th, 2016, a group of investigators and Sheriff Bareis meet via phone conversation with the Attorney General's office, who will serve as the prosecutor in this case.
It was determined that enough existed to believe this was a viable threat and warrants were issued for Gass for Threatening a public official and intimidation. A search warrant was issued for the recovery of any guns and executed by the Illinois State Police.
Gass was taken into custody without incident.
A $100,000 bond was placed on Gass and he posted bond $10,000 (10%) on March 11th and is currently out on bond.
