No injuries in camper fire

A Friday afternoon camper fire on Route 3 near the rest area south of Ellis Grove resulted in no injuries, according to Ellis Grove Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Jackson.

Jackson told the Herald Tribune that Missouri resident Joe Smith had stopped to refuel when the fire started.

"The story was it was out of fuel and he was putting fuel into it and priming the carburetor when the fire broke out," Jackson said. "Once those things start, they're real difficult to get out before you lose them.

"Too much flammable material inside."

Smith was outside the camper when the fire started and was not injured. All that was reportedly left of the camper was its frame.

Jackson said firefighters were on scene for about an hour.

On Saturday, the EGVFD participated in a car versus house training.

"A lot of learning," Jackson said. "Everything worked out pretty good."

The EGVFD has been training in an old farmhouse north of Roots Road that the property owner plans to take down eventually.

"The plan was to have extrication in a difficult situation," Jackson said. "But the area where we were going to put the van into, the garage door wasn't big enough to get the vehicle in."

Instead, the van was shown to have impacted a different area of the house and firefighters had to rescue a resident.

"Even if you have a call a day, you would learn something different on each call," Jackson said. "Every call is different.

"Learning different techniques on putting a fire out or rescuing a victim. Repetition is real good training."
