Du Quoin teen's vehicle hits, kills Elkville pedestrian

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has identified the driver involved in Saturday's fatal traffic crash involving an Elkville pedestrian as Shiann Raines, 18, of Du Quoin. Rains was the sole occupant of a northbound vehicle that struck Lynn Easley, 70, of Elkville at approximately 10:35 p.m. Saturday on Rt. 51 near the Canadian National Railroad overpass north of DeSoto.

No charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation.

The office of Jackson County Coroner Thomas W. Kupferer says Easley was walking down the middle of Rt. 51 north of DeSoto when he was struck and killed by the teen driver late Saturday night.

The Jackson County Sheriff's office notified the Jackson County Coroner's office of the death that occurred as a result of a motor vehicle pedestrian accident on Rt. 51 North of Rude Cemetery Road at 10:35 p.m.

The pedestrian was later identified as Lynn E. Easley, a 70-year-old resident of Elkville.

An acquaintance advised that he had been at a local tavern "JB's" earlier in the evening.

Mr. Easley had multiple injuries resulting from the trauma he sustained at the time of the accident.

Mr. Easley was pronounced dead at the scene and died of multiple injuries. Toxicology tests are being done. Results are pending and findings could take up to three weeks.

Jackson County Sheriff's Department deputies and an accident scene reconstructionist conducted the investigation and were assisted by the DeSoto and Dowell Police Departments in cooperation with the Jackson County Ambulance Service and Elkville first responders.

Pettett Funeral Home of Murphysboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Case Investigated

The coroner's office is also investigating the death of a 33-year-old Carbondale man who died at his home on Blue Jay Drive in Carbondale on Saturday. Christopher Brooks Geyerman was transported by Jackson County Ambulance Service to the emergency room at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale at 1:49 a.m. Saturday.

He was unresponsive following cardiac arrest. Paramedics provided emergency resuscitative treatment which continued during from the time paramedics answered the call until the time they got to the hospital. An autopsy is planned. Toxicology tests are being done from blood samples.
