Law enforcement conducts sex offender check

Law enforcement officers from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, United States Marshals Service and Chester, Percy, and Sparta Police Departments conducted a combined compliance and verification operation on June 14.

Compliance operations help law enforcement keep track of registered adult and juvenile sex offenders, child sex offenders, child murderers, violent offenders against youth, and murderers.

Officers conducted unannounced visits to the homes of registered offenders throughout Randolph County to verify their addresses, workplaces, and other information.

A total of 88 offenders were checked. Six were found to be out of compliance.

"I know last time, we were somewhere in that same neighborhood," said Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff on the ratio of offenders to those not in compliance. "The amount out of compliance was similar to this time."

One arrest, 63-year-old Michael Spence, was made of an offender residing at an address at which he was not registered. Spence was registered as being from Coulterville and he is now in Tilden.

Four other offenders were not located and deemed to be in violation of the Sex Offender Registry Act.

Arrest warrants will be sought for those persons.

"We will continue working hard to ensure that offenders living in Randolph County follow the rules and guidelines set forth by the state and federal authorities," Wolff said. "It is important that law enforcement and the public know the whereabouts of these offenders."

Wolff encourages the public to contact his office at 618-826-5484 if they have any information on a non-compliant sex offender.
