Dropped cell phone leads to car accident

A dropped cell phone was the cause of Monday's accident at the corner of Servant and State streets, according to Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey.

In a news release, Coffey stated that 22-year-old Megan E. Throop, of Chester, was traveling eastbound on State Street in a Ford Taurus when she reportedly dropped her cell phone.

Throop told law enforcement that she lost control of her vehicle when she reached to retrieve the phone, causing the vehicle to veer across the westbound lane and strike a concrete retaining wall in front of 903 State St.

Throop was not injured in the incident, which was reported at 5:58 p.m., and was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The crash drew a lot of curious onlookers who were out on an evening stroll in the cooler weather.

People at the scene told the Herald Tribune they saw a passenger from Throop's vehicle flee the area, but Coffey said Throop was the lone occupant of the Taurus.

"She did not confirm she had a passenger with the officers," he said.
