No injuries in fire at Spartan Light Metal

An Aug. 4 fire at Spartan Light Metal Products in Sparta resulted in no injuries, according to Sparta Fire Chief Brian Adams.

The Sparta Fire Department was called to the facility around 3 a.m. to the report of a fire in the ceiling and arrived to find flames shooting through the roof.

"It appeared to be electrical," said Sparta Fire Chief Brian Adams, when reached for comment on Tuesday.

Glen Dunbar, human resource manager at Spartan Light Metal Products, said in a Tuesday news release that the fire started in the business's foundry area.

"Thanks to the quick response and efforts of the Sparta Fire Department, with mutual aid from the Coulterville, Steeleville and Tilden fire departments, as well as MedStar of Sparta, the fire was quickly contained to a small area and extinguished quickly," Dunbar said in the release.

Adams said the fire affected a 200-foot section of the roof in one of the older sections of the building, near the middle of the facility.

"We were there close to three hours," he said. "We had it knocked down within the first 10 or 15 minutes, but it was hard to access and we didn't want to leave until we made sure it was out.

"You hate having to fight it twice."

Randolph County sheriff's deputies also responded to assist with evacuations.
