Air handler unit causes SLM call

A Saturday afternoon fire call at Spartan Light Metal Products turned out to be minor, according to Sparta Fire Chief Brian Adams.

Around 4:30 p.m., the SFD received a report of smoke in the offices at the facility.

"They had a problem with the air handler on the roof," he said. "It filled a couple of the offices with smoke. It was almost a non-event."

Adams said it was an electrical fire that put itself out in the steady rain.

"The motor had burned out," he said. "The air handler's purpose is to blow air into the building and that's where the smoke went.

"I'm very glad that's all it was."

Adams said firefighters were on scene for around 15 minutes. The Steeleville Fire Department was paged for mutual aid, but then later disregarded.

The fire call was the second at Spartan Light Metal in a little more than a week, after an Aug. 4 electrical fire - that started in a piece of equipment in the facility's foundry section - burned a 200-foot section of the roof.

There were no injuries in that incident and all employees were evacuated safely.
