Medical issue ruled cause of bean field incident

A medical issue is believed to be the cause of a single-vehicle accident in a bean field north of Chester on Monday morning.

According to a Chester Police Department news release, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Palestine Road and Three Springs road in reference to a vehicle that had veered off the roadway and into a field.

Upon arrival, officers located a silver 2002 Chevrolet four-door sedan - which contained Gary D. Rubach of Chester - roughly 150 yards off the roadway in a bean field southeast of the Palestine Road/Three Springs road intersection.

A witness in a vehicle following behind Rubach watched the incident unfold and called 911.

The witness told the Herald Tribune that Rubach's vehicle initially stopped short of the field and then proceeded into it.

The witness said he left his own vehicle at the side of Palestine Road, ran down to Rubach's vehicle and observed him slouched over behind the steering wheel.

The witness noted he beat on the driver's side window and that apparently revived Rubach, who was alert and responsive when first responders reached him.

Rubach was transported to Chester Memorial Hospital by MedStar Ambulance. The accident was reported at 10:33 a.m.
