CHS frosh to kick off preseason at Jamboree

For the second straight year, the Chester freshman football team will head north to Freeburg on Saturday for its "preseason" as part of the Midgets' Frosh Jamboree.

The young Yellow Jackets will take on host Freeburg, Nashville and Belleville East in games that feature no special teams and a 20-minute running clock. The games do not count in the standings and are a way for coaches to gauge their players prior to the start of full contests.

"It'll give us a chance to discover any weaknesses prior to the season opener," said Chester coach Charles Colvis. "We also have some positions that are still up in the air on which kid is the best fit."

Chester will take on Belleville East at 9:30 a.m., Nashville at 10 a.m. and wrap up the competition against Freeburg at 11:30 a.m.

Each period will begin at the offensive team's 40 yard line and on fourth down, a team may elect to give up the down and move to the defensive team's 40 yard line.

After the Jamboree, the CHS freshmen have a week off before traveling to Sparta in Week 3 for Heritage Bowl II.

Now in its 47th year as a freshman program, the Yellow Jackets are looking to extend the program's school-record win streak to eight seasons.

Chester finished 4-3 in 2015, including 4-0 in the Black Diamond Conference.

The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to play Freeburg in a full game on Sept. 22 at W.O. Smith Field.
