CHS golf teams tee off 2016 season with young squad
<p class="p1">The Chester High School girls and boys golf teams began their 2016 season with a home match on August 18 against Waterloo-Gibault.
<p class="p1">Several Steeleville golfers attended also, however they did not support a team score for this match.
<p class="p1">Waterloo-Gibault won,167-199, but Chester's Baylee Modglin was the low medalist with a score of 38.
<p class="p1">Teammate Trent Doiron shot 51, and both Jacob Wingerter and Matt Smith shot identical scores of 55, giving CHS its team score.
<p class="p1">Chester's Lake Fogerson was close behind the top four with his score of 56.
<p class="p1">Waterloo was led by Zach Hecht and Alex Deitz, who both shot 40 for the Bulldogs, followed by Lucas Hermann (42) and Thomas Hermann (45) for their winning team score of 167.
<p class="p1">"The Lady Jackets fared better in their first match of 2016," said CHS assistant coach Paul Zemlyn.
<p class="p1">"We are very young and still learning, but the girls are working hard and improving every day."
<p class="p1">Low medalist for the girls' side of the match was Emily Tudor, who shot 50. Alyse Vasquez followed with a score of 54, while Jackie Hopkins turned in a score of 56 and Hanna Bert shot 60 for a team score of 220.
<p class="p1">Freshman Mallary Vasquez recorded a score of 67 in the first match of her high school career.
<p class="p1">Steeleville's low scorer was Kellyn Rolhing, who turned a score of 56 and Raegan Grefe recorded a score of 67.
<p class="p1">Steeleville's third Lady Warrior, Caitlin Schwartz, shot 64.
<p class="p1">The Steeleville JV lost a close match to the Waterloo-Gibault JV by a score of 207 to 213. Chester's Clay Herrell shot 74 for the Chester JV.
<p class="p1">On Monday, the Lady Yellow Jackets traveled to Pyramid Oaks Golf Course to compete in their second competition of the early season.
<p class="p1">Chester finished tied for third with West Frankfort with a team score of 244 behind winner Red Bud (214) and Trico (221).
<p class="p1">Steeleville also sent golfers, but did not enter enough players to have a team score.
<p class="p1">Chester's Emily Tudor led the field of lady golfers with her score of 47. Alyse Vasquez was the second golfer for the Lady Yellow Jackets for the second with her score of score of 54.
<p class="p1">Hanna Bert shot 71 for the day, while teammate Alyssa Place was just one stroke behind with a score of 72.
<p class="p1">Freshman Parker Kippa turned in a score of 75, while Katy Liefer and Mallary Vasquez each had identical scores of 78.
<p class="p1">"Those Lady Jackets battled hard (Monday) and they are starting to have some success," Zemlyn said. "They are getting better every week."
