CHS Frosh compete well at Jamboree

It may go down as three losses, but Chester High School freshman football coach Charles Colvis believes his young team came away with some valuable experience at the Freeburg Frosh Jamboree on Aug. 27.

"Defensively as a group, they did alright, still looking for some improvement there," Colvis said. "But we'll get there. All-in-all, I thought they did well."

Chester fell 12-0 to Belleville East, 12-0 to Nashville and 18-0 to Freeburg, but was able to move the ball against the larger schools.

"Like I told the kids on Saturday, I told them not to be upset with their performance," Colvis said. "Belleville East had 40 kids there. That's almost four different teams.

"(Offensive Coordinator) Mike (Heffernan) and I were extremely pleased with their performance."

The frosh are off this week, giving the Yellow Jackets two weeks of valuable instruction and preparation leading into their season opener on Sept. 8 against Sparta in Heritage Bowl II.

"We've got to put in special teams and PAT and get that knocked out," Colvis said on the focus of the next few weeks. "Just execution on offense. Each week, we're adding new plays and continue with some tackling drills."
