CHS JV drops to 0-3

Tristin Hobeck put up his second straight 100-plus rushing performance, but Chester couldn't overcome three touchdowns from Vienna-Goreville's Danny Smith in a 22-14 loss to the Eagles on Monday.

Chester held a 8-6 lead on a two-yard touchdown plunge by Eathan Thompson with 7:14 left in the second quarter, but Smith scored his second TD of the night with 3:04 remaining before halftime to give V-G a 14-8 advantage at the break.

Smith added his third and final touchdown, from 27 yards out, with 45 seconds left in the third for a 22-8 Eagles lead.

Chester got back in it late, pulling to within a touchdown on freshman Ethan Rayburn's first high school TD - a one-yard dive with 8:45 remaining.

But a special teams gaffe on the ensuing onside kick cost Chester critical game time.

Kicker Ethen Eggemeyer's attempt didn't go the required 10 yards, but the Yellow Jacket players failed to touch the ball to blow the play dead. Instead, V-G's Brayden Perez picked up the ball and returned it to the CHS 20 before being tackled.

The Chester defense held, stuffing Aidan Kuhn for a one-yard gain on fourth-and-goal from the 17. That left the Yellow Jackets needing to go 84 yards in 5:27.

But a comeback wasn't in the cards as Erik Cowell was tackled five yards short of the first down on fourth-and-9 on the CHS 42.

The Eagles took over with 1:44 remaining and kneed out the clock, sending the Chester JV to an 0-3 start for the first time since 2008.

Up next, the Yellow Jackets will travel to undefeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn (3-0) next Monday. The Red Devils shut out Johnston City, 46-0, on Monday.

Hobeck finished with 101 yards on 13 carries for Chester, while Thompson added 51 yards on 14 carries.

Eggemeyer contributed 16 yards on four carries, while Cowell tacked on 26 yards on three carries. Finally, Rayburn had two carries for one yard and the touchdown.
