Rough start continues for CHS Frosh

SESSER -- After taking one to the chin in their season opener against Sparta, the Chester Frosh took one to the gut against Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn last week.

SVWW quarterback Tanner Eubanks ran for four touchdowns and threw for two more, as the Red Devils opened up a 30-point halftime lead en route to a 48-0 win on Sept. 15 at Caroll Kelly Field.

Chester's struggles on offense continued once again as the Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-1 Black Diamond Conference) were held to 37 yards of offense a week after being contained to 20 against Sparta.

Ethan Bert was a bright spot for Chester, finishing with 41 yards rushing on 15 carries. He also added five tackles on defense, including three for loss - one of which was an eight-yard sack.

The Yellow Jackets did manage to move the ball a little bit better than their performance in the Heritage Bowl, making it to the SVWW 29 before turning the ball over on downs late in the first half.

Chester finished with six first downs and was penalized twice for 10 yards.

But for the second straight week, one person did the bulk of the damage against the Yellow Jacket defense.

Eubanks ran for two scores and hooked up with Race Rynski for the first of two passing touchdowns to help give SVWW its halftime advantage.

Tyler Essary also blocked a Caleb Nolen punt and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

In the second half, Rynski hauled in a pass from Eubanks and took it 44 yards for the touchdown with 7:47 left in the third quarter, and Eubanks himself scored on TD runs of 41 and 43 yards 3:13 apart late in the frame.

After a long season-opening road trip, which included the Freeburg Frosh Jamboree, Chester was scheduled to have its home opener on Thursday against the Midgets.

The contest was to begin the toughest stretch of the season for the Yellow Jackets, who will also host Missouri football power Valle Catholic on Tuesday at W.O. Smith Field.

Kickoff on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
