Route 150/3 patching project to begin

As one IDOT project has come to an end on Roots Road, another one will begin Monday with road patching on state routes 150 and 3.

E.T. Simonds Construction Co. of Carbondale won the contract on the project - which was let out for bid by IDOT on July 29 - that extends from Allan Street (near the Randolph County Health Department) to the three-way stop of Opdyke and State Streets.

The $488,000 project then extends from the three-way stop to Crosby Street near the entrance to Chester Grade School.

According to IDOT Supervising Field Engineer Joe Gasaway, both lanes will be patched with concrete, not asphalt, through both sections of the project. Intermittent lane closures are to be expected, along with occasional delays.

"They're basically not going to be starting in the same place each day, they may be jumping around to finish sections," Gasaway said. "At the beginning, when they're doing the saw cutting, they'll be jumping from one lane to the other."

The contract has a deadline of Nov. 15. Mark Gard is the project engineer for IDOT.

"(E.T. Simonds) has a completion date on that contract, so it won't go any later than that," Gasaway said.

Gasaway noted that while Keeley & Sons is a frequent bidder for IDOT projects due to being in District 8 (which Randolph County is a part of), E.T. Simonds - which has an asphalt plant in Campbell Hill - occasionally picks up projects in this area.

"They come up every once in awhile and pick up jobs in Randolph County," Gasaway said. "They're in District 9, so they don't come up very often."

CGS Principal Tim Lochhead told the Herald Tribune he has been in contact with Gasaway regarding the project and how it will affect bus arrival and departure times.

More information is anticipated to be released soon.
