Stove fire interrupts Oktoberfest

Steeleville and Percy firefighters showed up for a parade and a fire broke out.

A reported structure fire at 402 W. Pine St. in Percy around 5:40 p.m. Friday resulted in both departments having to leave their lineup for the Oktoberfest parade, with Steeleville responding for mutual aid.

"From what I understand, it was a fire on the stove and the homeowners put it out with a fire extinguisher before we even got there," said Percy Fire Chief Dale Fisk. "I know my guys checked everything out and they managed to make it back in time for the parade."

Fisk was asked what happens if firefighters get a call when they're on parade detail and if they have to return to the firehouse to get their gear before responding.

"Usually, they put all their gear on the truck in case we get a call," he said. "It's not the first time that's happened."

Steeleville firefighters were released from the scene at 5:58 p.m.

"Thank goodness disaster was averted," Fisk said.
