Peterson transferred to federal custody
Convicted murderer Drew Peterson was transferred from state to federal custody on Tuesday, for a yet unknown reason.
Peterson was listed as a "temporary resident" at the Illinois Department of Corrections's northern reception and classification center in Stateville earlier that day. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson released the following statement to WGN:
"Drew Peterson has been transferred out of IDOC custody. For safety and security purposes, the IDOC does not discuss details concerning the placement of offenders who are transferred under the terms of the Interstate Compact Agreement."
According to various media outlets, Peterson was transferred to the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind. Terre Haute is about 200 miles northeast of Chester.
Peterson was held at the Menard Correctional Center in Chester. The 63-year-old former Bolingbrook police sergeant was convicted in June 2016 of attempting to orchestrate the killing of Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted Peterson's original murder trial of third wife Kathleen Savio.
Peterson was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the Savio murder and had another 40 tacked on by Circuit Court Judge Richard A. Brown in July 2016 after a Randolph County jury only needed an hour to find Peterson guilty of the murder-for-hire plot.
He has a projected parole date of May 7, 2081.
Peterson's fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007 and Drew remains the main suspect in that case. He is appealing both his original murder conviction and the murder-for-hire one.
