Smith's 29 leads Chester to semifinals

CAMPBELL HILL -- Savion Smith a game-high scored 29 points, and Chester took control in the second half of a 61-41 win over Trico on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Pioneers' own Class 2A regional.

It was the fourth time the Yellow Jackets had beaten Trico this season and the first half was definitely the closest of the series. Chester led by six, 20-14, midway through the second quarter, but the Pioneers put together a 10-4 run to tie the game at 24 at halftime.

"I felt like we had to make adjustments throughout the game, but I felt like with us keeping the tempo on-ball and the pressure on-ball, allowed us to do some things and play into our gameplan a little bit," said Chester coach Brad Norman. "I definitely felt like the tempo was sped up a little bit and I think that played into our favor."

Josh Haberberger added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (20-9), including six on back-to-back 3-pointers that allowed Chester to stretch its lead to 10, 36-26, late in the third quarter.
