'Small and mighty' Hornets take second at state

HERRIN -- It's a cliche, but it's true: you can't teach height.

Germantown used its physical advantage to overwhelm St. John Lutheran's front row and took a 25-11, 25-16 sweep of the Hornets in the championship game of the SIJHSAA Class S state volleyball tournament last Saturday at Herrin High School.

"We're a small school, we're small and mighty," said St. John coach Andrea Luthy. "We kept setting them up on their side of the net and they're all taller than we were and able to put it down.

"(Germantown) is a legit team, a very, very good team."

While St. John (23-3) finished its season with the second-place trophy, it capped an incredible postseason run that included the Hornets' first regional title since 1979.
