Frederking selected to John A. Logan All-Star Classic

Steeleville High School senior Reid Frederking has been selected to play in the John A. Logan All-Star Classic on Sunday, April 9.

Players will have a practice/draft workout this Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at the college.

This will be the second all-star appearance for Frederking, who is set to join teammate Andrew Grafton in the Lion's Club All-Star Game scheduled for Friday, March 31. IHSA rules allow players to participate in a maximum of three all-star contests without affecting eligibility for spring sports.

"I think this year, he finally put it all together," said Steeleville coach Bryce Bainter. "He connected all the dots and I told him throughout the year how proud I was of him.

"When Nic (Hagel) graduated last year, it left a big void in our offense and he really stepped up."

This year will mark the 30th All-Star Classic, which started in 1988 at Patoka High School.

In 1990, the Classic moved to Newton High School and stayed there for four years. Du Quoin High School became the host school in 1994 and conducted the festivities for the next 12 years.

Carbondale High School then hosted for five years until 2010 and Marion High School had hosting duties in 2011 and 2012 prior to the game moving to John A. Logan Community College.

In its history, more than 740 players have taken part in the All-Star Classic, representing 96 high schools.

Frederking averaged 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for Steeleville, both team highs, while playing in all 30 games for the 20-10 Warriors. He also shot 47.2 percent from the field in 2016-17, the best among the Warriors' starters.

During a three-game stretch in late January, Frederking scored a total of 74 points - including 30 against Webber Township in the Panther Basketball Classic on Jan. 28.

For the season, he had four 20-plus games and 12 games in which he scored at least 15 points.

"Since I've been here, the only Steeleville players who have been selected for the John A. Logan game have been Darin (Winkelman), A.J. (Jeffers) and Nic," Bainter said. "I would definitely say that's pretty good company."

For Friday's game at Rend Lake College, the girls' contest will take place at 6 p.m., with the boys at 8 p.m.

Boys head coaches are Mike Mooneyham (Herrin) and Justin Barrington (Du Quoin). Doug Miller (Gallatin County) and Brad Beatty (Webber Township) will be the coaches of the All-Star Classic.

Admission tickets at Rend Lake are $5 each. There will be a 3-point shootout at halftime of each game and a dunk contest preceding the boys' game.
