Edwards dominant in Indians 5-1 win over Crab Orchard
Jordan Edwards was dominant for the Indians Tuesday evening, allowing just one run over six innings while collecting a pair of RBI's in a 5-1 win over Crab Orchard.
Edwards worked through some control issues throughout, tossing seven walks, but was able to overpower the Trojans when he was in the zone, finishing with eight strikeouts.
"He might have been trying to be a little too fine at times, but he wasn't missing by a whole lot, just enough to not get the strikes," Du Quoin head coach Tim Craft said. "When he was in the zone he was kind of empowering, which is good to see."
Tevin Lee gave the Indians an early 1-0 lead, launching his sixth home run of the season over the left-center field fence in the first inning.
Alex Zimmerman and Hank Stewart got the offense going again in the third inning, leading off with a double and single respectively.
Crab Orchard retired the next two batters, but Edwards was able to come up with a two-out single to plate both runners to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Trojans picked up their one and only run of the game in the top of the fourth, on a home run to right field. They followed up with a single and walk, while a wild pitch put them on second and third with no outs.
But, Edwards settled down from there, striking out the next three batters to escape the inning with just the one run allowed.
The Indians got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Bryzn Witcher reached on a two-out walk and came around to score on a Crab Orchard error.
Ryan Meyers tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, coming around to score on another Trojan error after leading off the inning with single, extending the lead to 5-1.
Overall, the Indians collected seven hits while striking out 10 times, something Craft would like to see his team cut down on moving forward.
"We have gave away some bad swings on some bad pitches," Craft said. "But, Tevin coming up with the big home run early and Jordan with the big two-run single and we were able to add a (couple) runs on later on.
"It's a good team win, but we hopefully will keep moving up a little bit hitting wise."
Braden Lee came on in relief for Edwards in the seventh inning with a runner on first and no outs. Lee was able to strike out the first batter and induce a game-ending double play the next at bat to secure the 5-1 win.
Du Quoin (15-9) will look to make it three wins in a row Wednesday (today) against West Frankfort. The home game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
