The budget-less state of Illinois soon will owe the city of Pinckneyville nearly $800,000, seriously diminishing the city's unrestricted bank balance.
At Monday's meeting of the city council, Treasurer Rick Reese said the city's unrestricted bank balance as of April 30 was $734,124.35. While that is an increase of $180,386.47 over the balance of a year ago, the balance still runs between $200,000 to $800,000 below the unrestricted balance of the previous five years, Reese said.
Reese added that the city has faced the same problem for two years now. The state still owes the city money for utility bills, and when the bill is sent out next week, the state will owe the city almost $800,000, Reese said.
Also at this week's meeting:
- The council approved Dave Sanders' request for permission to close Ball Park Road all day July 21, 22 and 23 for the second round of the American Legion Baseball Tournament.
- Commissioner David Stone received approval to pay an Insituform Technologies USA LLC invoice totaling $17,104.25 for work done on the sewer line on Main Street from Parker Street to Kaskaskia Street earlier this year. Also on his Agenda was a request from the American Thresherman's Association for the city to pay half of the bill to provide usable space to the east of the Thresherman's Shed at the Pinckneyville City Fairgrounds. This area stays wet almost year-round and causes problems for people to use the area for pleasure or parking. The ATA is anticipating a cost of under $10,000, with the city's share being half that amount. Also, included in that price is putting in tiles in the center ring ditch at the south end of the racetrack.
- The council approved the renewal of the city's health insurance with Mutual Medical Insurance.
- Using IPRF grant funds, the council approved the purchase of a security system for the city pool from Security Alarm Corporation at a cost of $3,250. The system will include three cameras and a DVR machine to view the security footage.
- Loos Excaating Inc.'s bid of $4,200 to tear down the house at 108 E. Hawkins St., haul to the landfill, remove concrete and backfill with clay fill was approved by the council. The council also approved the Pinckneyville Dairy Queen's request for $10,000 in business district funds. The money will be used to make the required upgrades to the ice cream equipment.
The council went into executive session to discuss an ordinance regarding setting a price for the city to purchase property at 407 S. Main St., across from the Perry County Marketplace. In open session, the council voted to place the ordinance on file for public viewing before a vote May 22.
