Vernell Jackson 'Mac' McAlpin, formerly of Marion

Vernell Jackson "Mac" ("V.J.") McAlpin, passed peacefully into God's hands on May 18, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and dementia.

Mac was born Oct. 17, 1925, in Marion, Illinois, the son of Mary Starrick McAlpin and Baker McAlpin.

V.J. served in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monrovia, California, for over 64 years, was a member of the South Hills Kiwanis Club of Covina, California for over 50 years, and became an attorney in 1960 practicing law in the City of Covina for 56 years.

Mac loved music and loved singing in the choir at his church. He also loved bowling, golf and watching his children and grandchildren play baseball and softball. He loved Hawaii and spending vacation time there with his wife several times a year.

He is survived by his wife, Inez Northwood McAlpin; his children, Mara Lynn (Butch) Myers; William Brad McAlpin; Laury Jo (Mike) Quinn; stepchildren, Noelle (Andy) Borrello; Tracey (Tracy) Johnson; Allison (Jamie) Salazar and Warren Northwood; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother Earl Ray (Deloris) Dungey; sisters Deanna Baker and Marilyn (Keith) Chapman and sister-in-law Sue Dungey.

Vernell was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Jo McAlpin at age 2 years and nine months, his brother William Carl Dungey, his parents, and three nephews.

Forest Lawn Covina Hills services are scheduled as follows: Visitation 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 30; Celebration of Life at noon Wednesday, May 31, at Church of Our Heritage; Reception at 1:30 p.m. May 31 in the Tribute Center.
