Bob Butler's style as mayor is worth mimicking

I regret missing the opportunity to formally congratulate retiring Mayor Bob Butler, especially in the recent insert, "A Tribute to Robert Butler" (published in this newspaper on Jan. 24).

I had the privilege of serving the eastern half of Williamson County, as state representative, after legislative redistricting; all of Williamson County for four years as congressman, until severe gerrymandering of the district; and finally eight years as IDOT Assistant Secretary.

I remember a passing conversation with him at a restaurant concerning being an unfair victim of district map changes. He said, "Well, just keep singing; they can't take that away from you."

I responded, "Perhaps, I didn't sing good enough," to which he replied, "Or you were too good."

I mention that as an example of how, even though he wasn't afraid to deliver the harsh truth from time to time, he could disarm you with wit and charm ... a style worth mimicking!

During those years I learned to respect the unique attributes that set him apart from so many other elected officials. He was totally focused on the goals he had defined and skillfully followed up until the tasks were completed.

What most impressed me during my service in his city, was how he utilized the strategic locations of Interstate 57 and State Route 13 for the maximum benefits possible for Marion.

Finally, he truly knew how to surround himself with talented, dedicated people to get the job done.

Congratulations! Have a wonderful retirement. You deserve it!

May God bless you!
