Still shooting straight at 78 Age doesn't stop Jean Brown from her love of hunting
Jean Brown (known as "Granny" by friends), of Du Quoin, is quite a hunter.
She's 78 years old and her husband, Allan, is close to 80. They have to compensate a little as they grew older.
We no longer walk, we have an electric 4-wheel-drive side-by-side to get us and our equipment to our hunting spots.
In 2008, Allan and their son, Steve, began building hunting houses. We built two before redefining the one in the picture (we called it "Trump Tower" or our "Penthouse").
It is heated, has swivel chairs and its own porta-potty.
Jean uses the window ledge to support her crossbow or guns. She gets first shot and that is all it takes. Allan says she gets better every year.
In 2017, she took a spring turkey with a 20 gauge, 3-inch shotgun. In the fall season, a turkey with a crossbow, two deer with a crossbow and one deer with a black powder rifle.
When not seeing game, it makes a great place to read, share a picnic lunch - or as Allan admits - to catch a short nap.
This may not sound like hunting, but it is a great way to spend a day together.
It is not about shooting for antlers - although she has an 11-point hanging on our living room wall - we hunt for the meat.
We butcher and process all of our game at home. We have a meat cutter, which makes the steak cut-with-a-fork tender.
The people who say they don't like the taste of deer have never ever tasted Jean's chicken-fried steak smothered in milk gravy, mashed potatoes and pan bread. Just ask the people who have!
