City seeking images from Halloweens past

The city of Carbondale is seeking pictures of memorabilia from past Halloween celebrations.

Images of items including t-shirts and posters are wanted to promote a new Halloween celebration planned for this fall.

Email pictures with the word "Halloween" in the subject line to afox@explorecarbondale.com. Pictures also may be posted to social media using the hashtag #HalloweenInCarbondale.

Metz to speak to Learning in Retirement

Walter Metz will discuss "The Animation of America: On Dr. Seuss and the Cinema" at the Southern Illinois Learning in Retirement meeting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18. His presentation will focus on the cartoon work of Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel) in understanding recent films made at Pixar Animation Studios, such as "Finding Nemo."

Metz is a professor of film studies in the Department of Cinema and Photography at SIU. As a researcher, he is interested in the relationship between popular media forms and literature. He has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and mentoring, and he assists SIU students who are learning professional film and television reviewing.

The meeting, free and open to the public, will be held at Grace United Methodist Church located at 220 N. Tower Rd. in Carbondale. A coffee and social hour will begin at 9:30 a.m. For more information, call 618-536-7751.

'The Future of Water' to be presented at SIU

An event focused on water issues around the world will take place April 18 at SIU Morris Library's Guyon Auditorium.

"The Future of Water" will begin at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) southern Illinois chapter, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and the University Honors Program at SIUC, and Marion Medical Mission.

"This community building event, focused on water awareness, is designed so we can prepare for a peaceful and sustainable future as we serve our local and global communities," UNA-USA southern Illinois chapter education chair Melinda Yeomans said in a prepared release.

Refreshments and a reception will follow in the Morris Library Rotunda.

Farmer Jason to perform at Carbondale library

Emmy Award-winning children's musician "Farmer Jason" Ringenberg will make a free appearance at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Carbondale Public Library.

Farmer Jason has performed across the U.S. and Europe and has recorded four CD's, a DVD and a video that views on PBS stations. Ringenberg also a part of Jason and the Scorchers, rockers from Nashville, Tenn., and winners of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Music Association in 2008.

Carbondale spring cleanup planned for April 21

Carbondale's annual spring cleanup and recycling day will be April 21, and Keep Carbondale Beautiful is putting out the call for public participation.

KCB is looking for suggestions of "blight spots" that need attention. The public is asked to call or email the locations to 618-525-5525 or keepcb1326@gmail.com.

KCB also is recruiting volunteers from the community to help with the cleanup. Pre-registration is encouraged at keepcb.org. Start time is 9 a.m. T-shirts and lunch will be provided, with the help of Arnold's Market and others.

This year's sponsors include Burkdell Mulch, Burris Disposal Service, CIMCO and Southern Recycling Center. In-kind support comes from Silkworm, SIUC, the city of Carbondale and the Carbondale Park District.

Historic village open for public tours

The Harrison Bruce Historical Village at John A. Logan College is open for spring and summer

tours.

The village will be open Tuesday, April 17, May 1 and May 15. Public tours will be held the first and third Tuesdays of the month April through October. All tours are free.

Five structures are open for viewing. Private tours for any size group may be arranged by calling JALC at 618-985-2828 ext. 8425.

Science Center to look at Mars Curiosity mission

The Science Center of Southern Illinois, located at University Mall in Carbondale, will present a Science Café event entitled "Exploring Mars with Curiosity" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26.

Roger Wiens, Space Remote Sensing Group, Los Alamos National Laboratory, will discuss the rover Curiosity and discoveries it has made. Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012 and has traveled 12 miles over its surface since then.

Admission to Science Cafés is free, and everyone is welcome. Those who come early can enjoy a complimentary cup of Gloria Jean's coffee.

Special events planned for 150th of Memorial Day

The Jackson County Board, the cities of Carbondale and Murphysboro, and the General John A. Logan Museum are teaming up to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day in the United States May 28.

Local festivities will include the Memorial Day service with guests Gary Ecelbarger and Brian Ellis at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Carbondale; a wreath-laying ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at the General John A. Logan Monument in Murphysboro; lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. at 17th Street Bar and Grill in Murphysboro; and a book-signing event with authors Daniel Bellware and Richard Gardiner from 2 to 3 p.m. at the General John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro.

Tickets for the luncheon are available through May 27. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 12.
