For the 45th consecutive spring, Tom Hale of Marion is turning over soil in the southwest corner of his yard. "I really enjoy it," the retired coal miner said. "When my wife and I moved here, I soon learned that there used to be an old barn sitting in this spot ... and the homeowners kept a dairy cow in it to provide the family with milk. I knew right then this would be the perfect spot for my garden."
