indians finish fourth at own Du Quoin Classic meet
DU QUOIN - The Du Quoin High School boys track and field team hosted its own Du Quoin Classic meet Friday night at Van Metre Field and placed fourth among 18 scoring teams.
Madison won the meet with 138.5 points, followed by Nashville (99), Pinckneyville (87) and the Indians (85.5) with Hamilton County (44.5) rounding out the top five.
Also competing were Murphysboro, Carterville, Sesser-Valier, Fairfield, Benton, Carbondale, Sparta, Wayne City, Dupo, Chester, Steeleville, Waterloo Gibault and Christopher.
Dasani Edward won the triple jump with a mark of 42-5 and placed fifth in the long jump at 19-6.75. He also helped the 4x100 relay to a season-best time of 44.84 seconds and a narrow second-place finish behind Madison, which set a meet record at 44.05.
Also running that relay were Kyle Robinson, Ethan Zettler and Westly Milam.
Milam and Edward ran separate heats of the 100 dash but finished in second and third, respectively, with times of 11.51 and 11.80 seconds. Hamilton County's Jake Whipple was the winner in 11.39.
Milam also took second in the 200 at 23.45 just behind Madison's Alphonso Rice III (23.30) and placed eighth in the long jump (18-7). Rice also won the long jump with a meet-record distance of 22-0.5.
Robinson ran the 110-meter hurdles in just 15.92 seconds but placed third behind Madison's Dontez Pittman (15.24) and Kendall Kennedy (15.56).
Pinckneyville's Noah Conner won the high jump at 6-2, with teammate Lucas Downard second in pole vault at 10 feet.
Stetson Lappin was third in the 300 hurdles with a great time of 41.76 - he also finished behind Madison's Pittman (40.27) and Kennedy (41.19) and Pittman's time was a meet record.
Also for Pinckneyville, Grant Batteau was second in the 800 (2:04.5) and Garrett Johnson was third in the mile (4:39.93).
The Panthers were third in both the 4x800 and 4x400 relays and fourth in the 4x100 and 4x200.
In the throwing events, Pinckneyville's Dalton Kitchen was second in shot put at 46-2. Du Quoin's Toby Hottes placed seventh in shot put (41-2.75) and ninth in discus (112-8).
Du Quoin and Pinckneyville both run again together at the SIRR Conference meet as competitors in the Mississippi Division on Thursday in Sparta.
