DHS receives threatening letter from student

DU QUOIN - Du Quoin High School Principal Matt Hickam, along with the Du Quoin Police Department, announced Wednesday that the high school administration was made aware of a threatening statement in writing toward the school on Monday of this week.

"Upon investigating the written statement, the high school administration was able to identify the student and proceed with immediate and appropriate action in cooperation with local law enforcement," Hickam said. "The student was not present at the school at any time on Monday."

Hickam said local law enforcement and the administration of the high school and district take any and all threats toward the safety and security of Du Quoin schools very seriously.

"The matter has been addressed through our existing school/district policies and is being handled currently by law enforcement and the state's attorney's office," Hickam said.

"The safety of our school is the top priority."
