Steeleville gears up for annual July 4 picnic, parade
The Steeleville American Legion and Lions Club hosts Randolph County's annual premiere picnic on the grounds of the Steeleville American Legion on July 2-4.
The picnic will include a carnival, food and drink stands, carnival games, music and more. Arm bands will be sold for $20 prior to the picnic, which will cover carnival rides for the first two nights of the picnic only.
A craft show will be held on July 4 in the Legion large hall. Other activities on Legion grounds will include laser tag, a dunking booth and a vintage wooden bat baseball classic.
The Firecracker 3K run will begin at 9:40 a.m. on July 4. Registration runs from 8-9:20 a.m. at Mevert Automotive. The run will be followed by the annual parade at 10 a.m. on Broadway. This year's parade theme will be "America's Most Memorable TV Shows" and floats and other parade entries are expected to competitively follow the theme. The parade will include the floats, school bands, Ainad Shriner cars and band and St. Louis Cardinals' Fred Bird.
"We expect this year's parade to be quite large, certainly as large as other years," said Lea Dintelman, co-chairman of the parade committee. "We usually have a patriotic theme, but this year we decided to go with a theme that should be lots of fun.
"I've been getting calls right and left about entries and the entries should be lots of fun," she added. When I think of a parade, I think of bands, floats and queens. We'll certainly have all of that in this year's parade,"
A large fireworks show will begin at approximately 10 p.m. July 4.
